According to Greek mythology, the goddess Aphrodite offered oregano as a gift to a mortal man to make his life better. In ancient Greece oregano symbolised joy and happiness. It is the most widely used herb in Greek cooking and its flavour most strongly conveys the Greek landscape. Greek oregano is considered the best in the world. It has an intense aroma and is rich in vitamins and trace elements.
Properties-Uses: It has antibacterial, antidiarrhoeal and anti-inflammatory properties. As a beverage it is very invigorating, it combats coughs and reinforces the immune system. In cooking it is used to season Greek “choriatiki” salad, meat and soups.
Preparation: Boil a teaspoon of oregano in 250 ml water for a few minutes. Strain and drink hot with a little honey.
